Rochdale Ramblers

The group is part of the Manchester and High Peak Area of the Ramblers' Association

About our Walks

We organise walks each weekend and alternate Thursdays. Between May and the end of August we also organise short evening walks on alternate Thursdays. Most of the walks are in and around the South Pennine area and are off road in rural areas. We organise occasional coach trips and weekends away.

Thursday day walks usually cover 6 to 7.5 miles and are of a moderate grade. Weekend walks are on alternate Saturdays and Sundays, normally moderate grade and between 7.5 and 12 miles. Occasionally these weekend walks can be longer or more strenuous.

We also organise Leisurely Saturday walks once a month of about 5 miles. The Thursday evening walks all start at 7 p.m. and are between 4 and 5 miles, graded Leisurely to Moderate.

The group produces two simple printed programmes twice a year, in April and September. One programme is for the Thursday walks and the other for the weekend walks. These programmes are available to download from the Group website as PDF files and are distributed to local libraries and community centres. Further walk details and additions or corrections, are included in the monthly newletter which is sent to all group members. Members without internet access can request a postal copy.  Downloads

The walks programme is loaded to the National Ramblers website ( and is available on the group website in the same format.

Walks are graded using the national Ramblers scheme,Walks Difficulty  More detailed information may be available in the Newsletter or from the leader.

However nearly all our walks are graded either:

  • Leisurely - walks for reasonably fit people with at least a little country walking experience. May include unsurfaced rural paths. Walking boots and warm, waterproof clothing are recommended.
  • Moderate - walks for people with country walking experience and a good level of fitness. May include some steep paths and open country, and may be at a brisk pace. Walking boots and warm, waterproof clothing are essential.

Walking boots and suitable clothing are advised for all walks. Leaders may turn away walkers who are inadequately dressed for the conditions. A packed lunch is advised for day walks and snack/drink for half day ones.

The group encourages car sharing. On Saturdays meet in the cul de sac at the end of Manchester Road nearest the town centre; on Sundays in front of the Town Hall. If you are dependent on a lift, please check the possibilities with Joan Barker (07964318219). Where a time for car sharing is specified the leader will be at the meeting point. For local walks and the Thursday walks, please make your own arrangements.

Generally dogs are not permitted on Rochdale group walks with exception of Registered Assistance Dogs. Anyone wishing to bring a dog should contact the walk leader in advance to obtain his/her/their consent.
